Shelby is someone I instantly felt like I “understood.” Now, it may very well be that I don’t truly understand Shelby at all, only she can say… but at the time I really resonated with her quiet, saturnine demeanor. You may sense that in the pictures. I wanted to post this older session because I learned something on her shoot. Jay is moody. My wife could have told you that years ago (thank you very much, tip your waitress)… but what I mean by that statement is that I personally gravitate towards darker, moodier images. Shelby’s personality and “look” allowed me to explore that in a way I hadn’t before.
Incidentally, she is also a photographer, and I really dig what she does. Can you say moody images?!? Check out her work here and leave her some love.
When I think about shoots that I walked away feeling like I grew as an artist, this is most definitely one of them. In a lot of ways it was like my shoot with MacKenzie; the quietness and intensity of the subject forced me to think about how to accurately reflect that in the finished images. These are the shoots and the photos that energize me most. Of course I enjoy all kinds of photography, but give me “dark” and I am happy. Go figure.
